The Wine Auction Prices Proprietary Classification is a ranking of 200 individual investment-grade wines. It reflects cumulative historical performance rather than only one recent year. Average auction prices per bottle and total sales activity form the basis of the Classification. In a few instances, the final rank of a wine may be adjusted to take non-financial factors into account. Wines of recognized quality and prestige may be excluded from the Classification because they do not have a significant footprint in the secondary market, or have a short history. Certain regions are favored given the share they represent of this sector; others may be disfavored if they have a limited presence. This Classification, therefore, is not, except indirectly, a sensory (hedonic) assessment.
